STUDEBAKER OVERHAUL ILL-SUITED IN LONG RUN

In late 1920, the Studebaker Corporation's announced plans to liquidate the remaining portion of the company's horsedrawn business. The last Studebaker buggy had been built in 1919, and with this announcement, Studebaker would exit the horsedrawn business permanently.

While the company had been selling automobiles since 1902, Studebaker's South Bend factory remained largely dedicated to producing wagons and buggies. Some automobile bodies and components were built in South Bend, but the lion's share of Studebaker automobile production took place in Detroit.

With the discontinuation of Studebaker's remaining horsedrawn business, the company began a massive overhaul of the South Bend plant. Automobile production would shift to South Bend throughout the 1920s...
