MORE STUDEBAKER DEMOLITION AHEAD
South Bend panel authorizes purchase of Huckins building.

By JAMIE LOO
Tribune Staff Writer

SOUTH BEND -- Another portion of Studebaker Area A has been approved for demolition.

Andy Laurent, a city economic development planner, said the state historic preservation commission approved demolition for the Huckins Tool and Die building on the corner of Sample and Chapin streets.

The city redevelopment commission authorized the purchase of the building for $105,000 at its meeting on Friday.

"Hopefully we can get that torn down this year," Laurent said.

There are about 82 acres in Studebaker Area A, which includes the former Studebaker Stamping Plant. Demolition for the stamping plant was approved in December and probably will begin in February, Laurent said. (more story follows)
